Glass The Tramp & Young Trey Makin’ It Funky

Thursday, August 11, 2011 · No Comments

Glass The Tramp has been hard at work on his debut album due out early 2012.

The album is a blend of funk, rock, hip hop and R&B fused into one super dynamic hard-hitting album that has industry folks already buzzin. The album is amazing as GBCWow got a first hand exclusive studio session. GBC was personally invited to spend a few hours in the studio with Glass The Tramp and Young Trey who has been collaborating on a new sound that no one is doing these days.

The Brussels Belgium grown talent, Glass The Tramp relocated to the states on the East Coast.  Glass is versed in Opera and is a known song-writer and performer in the business. Glass writes his own lyrics and composes his own music, but with the help of one of the West Coast’s iconic producers, Young Trey, there is no boundaries for the new album.

However, Glass The Tramp has been spotted around the Los Angeles area, recently as he celebrated an evening with Terry O’Neill and Raquel Welch. Glass even made history with the first Internet video invitation for Love The Truth clothing line. Glass the Tramp also had an explosive birthday bash back in December, which was one of the close out parties of 2010 you didn’t want to miss.

Moreover, Glass The Tramp is more than your average artist on the rise. He’s been currently working on his debut album with the talented Young Trey.

It’s a pure Funk-fusion classic derived from the gritty sounds of the Los Angeles streets fused with the crazed eclectic sounds of Parliament and the UK.  Glass has been working late nights in the studio with Young Trey making this ground breaking collaboration. From songs like “Fun Fun” and “So Much Better – Remix” featuring Janet Jackson the album is set to be a platinum hit.

But Glass The Tramp couldn’t do this without the help of one of Hip Hop’s most known producers, who was the creative master–mind behind the distinctive sounds of WC, Ice Cube, MC Eight, Fat Joe, Jermaine Dupri, Foxy Brown Mac 10 and Westside Connection.

Young Trey has been in the business for twenty years. Today, he’s more seasoned as an artist/producer. His green days are over. Trey has a true passion for music.  He first got his break when he started working with Ice cube and WC back in the 90’s. However, Trey has always had a love for funk so when Glass The Tramp approached Young Trey It was the perfect fit. With Glass’s off set, crazed, fun and uplifting lyrics and Trey’s creative, street sounds and love of funk the two have found a collaborative bliss in the studio.

Watching them work together was amazing and to see young Trey on the boards was like watching Michael Angelo paint a master piece for the Vatican.

When asking Trey about working on the “Glass The Tramp Project”, he had a lot to say:

“Primarily it’s a funk type of vibe, which is easy for me…Glass is bringing back funk project. Funk is what I was originally doing, because the West Coast is Funk, that’s my roots.”

On The similarities of West Coast Hip Hop:

When speaking on West Coast rap, you can tell “The similarity is the sound that I bring… when I create funk you can always tell I’m the one bringing it. It’s a Funk beat and Glass singing over it.”

“When I have anything to do with it…it’s going to be a classic record.”

The sound is distinctively Young Trey.

Trey gives advice to up and coming producers:

He said:

When Trey first started he said, “I was green when I first started.”

“I think new producers of course is going to be hungry, but to make it count, try to work with established artists out the gate. Coming into the game I always strived to work with established artists, and that’s how I do what I’m doing now.”

How Trey and Glass The Tramp got together on this project:

“I met Glass Through an artist named Gypsy and he told Glass about my sound because it unique and hard to come by. Once Glass heard my beats we started working together.”

Young Trey on today’s music:

“I think the West Coast is trying to fit in with the down South sound and modernize the sound, but it’s not ok to take somebody else’s sound and make it work. “I feel that our [West Coast] sound is lost.”

“I think this project will make people want to go back to the original sound.”

“My sound only left because of an altercation with Westside Connection, but with the Glass The Tramp and this record it’s gonna rejuvenate it and my sound will strive.”

On bringing a hard edge to the album:

“Well what’s so crazy is Glass comes to the studio and I create the beats according to what he wants, but the track that I have done are created from his lyrics – but so far its been fun and partying and that what its been so far. If he says he wants “Super Street” then I will go there.”

Do you see Ice Cube or Game collaboration on this project?

“At this point, I don’t know.” I couldn’t answer that, Cube is unpredictable.”

His feelings on Auto-Tune:

“I don’t really use auto-tune, I’m not the type of person who ride a fad…I don’t run with a trend…I don’t mimic a sound….I never use auto-tune in the first place and Glass The Tramp don’t need it.”

“I’m the type of person that can pick up an artist vibe and ride they vibe with them…working with Glass, he knows what he want to do, so it’s easy. Because he knows what he wants when he comes in, he makes it easy.”

It’s one of the most interesting interviews for true Hip Hop heads and West Coast rap lovers. Young Trey will keep you captivated and give pure insight on what you didn’t read. Find out what Trey had to say about his upbringing and history in Hip Hop.
