MIXTAPES: Wale’s No Days Off Shows His Dedication To The Grind
The 26-year-old Wale is probably best known for his songs “Chillin’” featuring Lady Gaga and “Pretty Girls” featuring Gucci Mane, but now he is bringing you his latest mixtape No Days Off.
Judging by the quality of his work, the D.C. native was very serious when he chose the title of his LP. With many freestyles showcasing his ability to flow to a beat better than many artists and some of his own original material, Wale is more than prepared to have his music at the top of the charts.
DJ! Run That Back!:
The Breakup Song: In 1980, Stevie Wonder blessed the music industry with “All I Do.” Now it is 2011 and Wale’s producer has sampled the hit for his own upbeat take on the track. While still about love, Wale has transformed the song into one about heartbreak and getting over a past relationship from a man’s perspective. It is refreshing to hear a nice hip hop song that is not about money, jewels, or numerous affairs with promiscuous women.
Let’s Chill (feat. Lloyd): Wale transforms a ’90s hit into an upbeat, sexy track for the ladies with his version of “Let’s Chill.” With the soulful, sultry Lloyd on the chorus and hook what could go wrong? Nothing, nothing could go wrong.
Retrosuperfuture (feat. Rick Ross & Wiz Khalifa): This track actually seems to be more of a Rick Ross track and he does a great job with his verses, as well as Wiz with the chorus. When Wale comes on the track, however, it brings a totally different ambience. It seems like his vocabulary is a little more universal and not so “street”. Oh, he fancy, huh?
Make It Rain Freestyle: I usually try to stay away from speaking on songs like this that have multiple artists jumping on the beat, but there is an exception to every rule, right? “I don’t know you chic. You don’t know me. Baby, I’m a dog so the hoes all flee.” Wale uses hidden double entendres, smooth rhymes and wordplay to rock the beat in a one-of-a-kind way.
Jump Freestyle: Wale is making everybody in the club “jump, jump” with this single. His lyrical delivery and content is so consistent, quick and witty that you may want to run it back and catch everything you may have missed. After hearing it once you will probably listen to it again just because it’s a great song.
The Extra Trip (The Way To My Love): An excerpt from an episode of Seinfeld opens up this seductive jam. Wale slows it all the way down for this track featuring strong drums, soft piano keys, and hard knocks.
Honorable Mentions:
Hit It From The Back Remix (feat. Juicy J & Diamond): Another melody for the ladies. Wale provides sexy lyrics about bedroom fantasies while the mid-tempo beat plays in the background. This song would have made the “DJ! Run That Back!” list, but ex-Crime Mobb member Diamond and Juicy J of Three 6 Mafia ruined the mood with their hard voices and lyrics. A sultry song should be sexy through and through.
